Grants for Northeast Florida
We call Northeast Florida home. That's why it's important to us to see the area grow healthier, safer and stronger for our neighbors and family through the support of local nonprofit organizations.
The application deadline for grants to be awarded in 2009 is Noon on October 7, 2008.
Our funding affects:
- Health/Medical. Targeting programs and initiatives to meet the medical needs of our community.
- Vital Social Concerns. Targeting programs that focus on supplying the tools and enhancing the skill sets needed for individuals to be able to live self-reliant and productive lives.

The Sontag Foundation is not currently funding in the following program areas:
programs OUTSIDE the Northeast Florida area, animal rights, athletics, building funds, capital campaigns, environment, sponsorship of fundraising events, long-range program support, or subsidizing general operating budgets.
Eligibility Requirements
In order to submit a preliminary request for a grant from The Sontag Foundation, applicants must meet each of the following eligibility criteria:
- The organization must be defined as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code.
- The organization must be operating and providing programs in the greater Jacksonville area, which for the purpose of this funding opportunity includes Duval, St. Johns, Clay, Putnam and Nassau Counties.
- Requests for funding must be submitted on the form provided in forms for grants in NE FL and within the timeframes posted.
Funding
Each year, The Sontag Foundation anticipates funding up to $1 million in grants in Northeast Florida.
- Monetary range of individual grant awards will be no less than $25,000 and no more than $100,000 per year. Proposals requesting funding outside these limits will not be considered.
- Grant amounts will be determined by the program needs detailed in the request and the corresponding budget needs.
Evaluation criteria include:
- Quality and feasibility of program
- Identified program addresses a specific need and will have a significant impact on the lives of individuals being served
- Relevance to the community's needs and applicant organization's expertise
- Relevance to The Sontag Foundation's desire to foster individuals' self-reliance
- Appropriateness of budget request
- Evidence regarding a plan for sustainability of targeted program beyond the duration of The Sontag Foundation grant
Application Process & Timeline
- Preliminary Grant Requests for funding in 2009 are due by Noon on October 7, 2008.
- The Sontag Foundation reviews all preliminary grant requests and will notify organizations of the status of their request by December 15, 2008.
- Selected applicants are then invited to submit supplemental information; deadline for submission is Noon on January 15, 2009.
- Site visits will be conducted during January and February, Site visits are not a formality; they are an integral part of the information-gathering and decision-making process.
- Funding will be disbursed in April 2009.
