The Sontag Foundation Completes $4.5 million project at Harvey Mudd College
Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (January, 2005) - The Sontag Foundation announces completion of the Frederick and Susan Sontag Residence Hall. The dormitory is configured with 18 suites with full kitchens in addition to 42 singles, and 18 doubles. 75 students have been housed since the beginning of the 2004/2005 academic year. Students enjoy the following amenities in their new residence hall: three study rooms, laundry facilities, one phone and one cable TV hookup per room, and two data ports per bed.
Sontag Hall boasts two other unique features: it is the site of the first faculty in residence program at Harvey Mudd College, and it is the first building in the Claremont Colleges consortium to be granted LEED certification for energy efficiency and environmentally sensitive design. An assistant professor of physics lives in the residence hall and hosts regular event for students. The LEED certification positions this residence hall among fewer than 200 buildings in the world to earn this designation. LEED-NC is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, energy efficient, environmentally friendly, sustainable "green" buildings.
Rick Sontag is a graduate of Harvey Mudd College and Susan Sontag is a graduate of Pomona College, both part of the Claremont Colleges consortium. Their generosity enabled the success of this project.
The Sontag Foundation is a private foundation located in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. It is committed to making a difference in the lives of individuals by supporting medical research in selected fields on a national level as well as by addressing educational and social needs in its home community.
