The Sontag Foundation Awards $50,000 for Medical Research
Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (July 13, 2004) - The Sontag Foundation awarded a $50,000 medical research grant to Jon T. Giles, M.D. of Johns Hopkins Medical Center. In collaboration with Arthritis National Research Foundation of Long Beach, CA, The Sontag Foundation supports cutting edge research projects developed by talented young post-doctoral investigators in established laboratories in the United States.
Dr. Giles, a post-doctoral fellow in the Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at Johns Hopkins, is exploring the effect of TNF inhibitors on left ventricular structure and function in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. His goal is to learn more about why congestive heart failure is more prevalent in people with rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Giles states, "The study holds immediate potential to explore conflicting issues surrounding a commonly prescribed therapeutic agent. In addition, this project holds great potential to spawn further research into the role of inflammation on the myocardium in rheumatoid arthritis."
