The Sontag Foundation and Society for Neuro-Oncology Honor Children's Memorial physician, Dr. Stewart Goldman
Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (December 3, 2003) - The Sontag Foundation presented Dr. Stewart Goldman the 2003 Quality of Life Award under the auspices of the Society for Neuro-Oncology (SNO). Dr. Goldman is Medical Director of Neuro-oncology and Gus Foundation Chair of Neuro-Oncology at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL, as well as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. Goldman received the award at the Society's Annual Meeting, recently held in Keystone, Colorado. The Sontag Foundation presented the award to Goldman for his research entitled, Quality of life for childhood brain tumor survivors.
Goldman's research study addressed the quality of life for childhood brain tumor survivors. He sought to advance knowledge concerning this issue by interviewing survivors, their parents, and experts. The results will facilitate the development of a Quality of Life scale for this population.
Kay Verble, Executive Director of the Foundation said, "It is a privilege to acknowledge Dr. Goldman and his team at Children's Memorial Hospital; their research should play an important role in improving the lives of pediatric brain cancer patients."
The Sontag Foundation made the 2003 SNO Quality of Life Award possible through a generous donation. A primary focus of the Foundation, established by the Sontag family, is improving the lives of those individuals who suffer from brain tumors or rheumatoid arthritis by funding initiatives in medical research.
Dr. Ed Shaw, outgoing president of the Society of NeuroOncology said, "The mission of SNO is greatly empowered through the generous support from The Sontag Foundation. We believe the work of the SNO, and the profile of award recipients also fosters the success of The Sontag Foundation. Dr. Goldman has assisted brain tumor research through the creation of a useful tool by which to assess quality of life for pediatric patients."
